Four serving Royal Marines who are in the
twilight of their long careers in the Corps and who are
determined to make a final contribution to the memories of those
who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country
are planning to travel to each of those Royal Marines whose
valour was marked by the award of the Victoria Cross. They plan
to attend to their graves and lay a wreath on each as a mark of
respect from all those who have followed in their footsteps in
the Corps.Exercise Respecting
Valour will take place in April 2004 to mark the one hundred and
fiftieth anniversary of the award of the first Victoria Cross to
the Royal Marines. Additionally, five of the Victoria Crosses
were awarded in the month of April.
The recipients of the Victoria Crosses
are buried across the globe. Five of which are buried in the
United Kingdom and five being buried on foreign soil, or in the
case of Major Harvey RMLI VC, buried at sea. Achieving their
goal, to visit each of the graves, will take a great deal of
time and money, hence the reason they are beginning their
preparations well in advance.
The overall cost of the project is
approximately £20,000, of which the team will personally donate
£8,000, this leaves £12,000 to be raised through donations and
sponsorship. Your help and support would be greatly appreciated,
no matter how small the amount you can contribute.
All donations should be sent to the
address on the
Contact page.
